Healing Begins With Listening

Understanding your health begins with understanding you.

Your symptoms are important, but they are only part of the story. We want to know when your health began to change, what was happening at the time, what you have already tried, what has helped, what hasn’t, and what may have been overlooked.

Your medical history matters. So do your nutrition, digestion, sleep, stress, medications, supplements, past illnesses, family history, lifestyle, and home and work environment. Sometimes a detail that initially seems unrelated becomes an important piece of the puzzle.

Meet the Doctors

Looking for the Connections

The body does not function as a collection of separate systems.

Digestive health can influence immune function. Hormonal and metabolic changes can affect energy, sleep, mood, and weight. Nutritional deficiencies can affect many different systems. Environmental exposures may contribute to symptoms in susceptible individuals.

This is why we look for patterns and relationships rather than considering each symptom in isolation.

We ask questions such as:

Why might this be happening?

What changed before the symptoms began?

Could several seemingly unrelated symptoms be connected?

Is something interfering with the body’s ability to function normally?

The answers are different for every person.

Looking Beyond the Symptoms

Symptoms tell us that something has changed, and relieving symptoms can be important.

But controlling a symptom and understanding why it is occurring are not necessarily the same thing.

Fatigue, for example, can have many possible contributors. Poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems, thyroid or hormonal changes, blood sugar dysregulation, medications, infection, environmental exposures, stress—or several factors occurring together—may deserve consideration.

Two people can therefore have the same symptom or diagnosis and require very different evaluations.

We don’t want to know only what you have. We want to understand what may be contributing to it.

Testing With a Purpose

Laboratory testing can provide valuable information, but more testing is not necessarily better testing.

We begin with your history and determine what questions need to be answered.

Sometimes conventional laboratory testing provides the information we need. At other times, advanced functional or specialty testing may help us look more deeply at areas such as digestive function and the microbiome, nutritional status, hormones, metabolism, environmental exposures, immune function, or tick-borne illness.

The goal is not to collect test results.

The goal is to obtain information that can help guide your care.

An Individualized Plan

Once we have a better understanding of the factors that may be affecting your health, we develop a plan based on you.

Depending upon your needs, this might include nutrition, lifestyle changes, sleep and stress support, exercise, targeted nutritional supplementation, botanical medicine, environmental changes, or other naturopathic approaches.

When appropriate, specialized supportive therapies available through Pivotal Health may also be incorporated into the overall plan.

There is no single protocol that is right for everyone.

Your priorities, lifestyle, ability to make changes, health goals, and financial considerations all matter.

A good plan isn’t simply one that looks good on paper. It has to make sense for the person who has to live it.

Following the Response

Developing the initial plan is only the beginning.

We want to know what happens next.

Are you feeling better?

What has changed?

What hasn’t changed?

Did something improve that we didn’t expect?

Did a recommendation create a problem or prove difficult to follow?

Do we need additional information?

Your response provides information too. As we learn more, the plan can be adjusted.

Your care should evolve as our understanding of your health evolves.

Working With Conventional Medicine

Naturopathic medicine does not mean rejecting conventional medicine.

There are times when medications, diagnostic imaging, surgery, emergency care, or specialist evaluation are necessary and important.

There are also times when nutrition, lifestyle, digestive health, environmental factors, or other potential contributors deserve greater attention.

We believe these approaches can complement one another.

When appropriate, we encourage communication and coordination with your other healthcare providers so that each part of your healthcare has a place in the larger picture.

Your Health Is More Than a Diagnosis

A diagnosis can be extremely useful. It can identify a disease and help determine appropriate treatment.

But a diagnosis doesn’t always explain why this happened to this person at this time.

That leads us back to the questions at the heart of our approach:

What may have contributed to the problem?

What is interfering with normal function or recovery?

What can be changed?

What can be supported?

What can we do to help promote better health going forward?

There is rarely one test, one supplement, or one treatment that provides every answer.

Our job is to listen, investigate, put the pieces together, and develop an approach that makes sense for you.

Listen. Investigate. Understand. Individualize.

That’s our approach.
